Mapping the Combined Impacts of Peak Oil and Climate Change

For cities, many of the most visible impacts (i.e. food scarcity, or refugee migration) will be amplified by both peak oil and climate change.  In other situations, respones to one crisis might have a negative impact on the other (i.e. burning coal - which reduces oil dependence, but increases the risk of climate shocks).

In the diagram below we've mapped out two axes (one for potential climate related shocks, and one for potential energy shocks) as a means to describe three different shock scenarios that can be used for planning resilient cities:

  • Scenario 1: Past Economic Trends (PET)
  • Scenario 2: Accelerated, Turbulent Transition (ATT)
  • Scenario 3: Major Shock Transition (MST)
